Letter to Congress in Support of Economic Assistance Legislation

September 20, 2001

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), its 50 state league affiliates and the District of Columbia, 10,400 credit unions and our 81 million members, I am writing to express our immediate and unqualified support for any actions you may take to alleviate the crisis in our transportation system, and to reduce its economic impact on our airline industry. Virtually every airline in the United States is served by a member credit union. Never in history has the airline industry been in such urgent need of immediate support from the Federal government.

We also represent credit unions meeting the needs of others who are impacted by the national emergency. We understand that the most current needs are for the airline, transportation, hospitality, travel, insurance and other affected industries. As these needs are met, we additionally offer our support for any activities that are deemed necessary to stabilize and ultimately enhance our economic situation. Credit unions' motto of "people helping people" will be extended in any way possible to meet our Nation's needs during this difficult time.

We stand united in our support.
