Kathleen (Kathy) Thompson is senior vice president of compliance and legislative analysis for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). She manages a staff of five who focus on providing compliance information to leagues and credit unions. She also provides assistance to CUNA’s lobbyists in assessing the impact of federal legislation on credit union operations.
Thompson has represented credit unions before the National Credit Union Administration, the Federal Reserve Board, the Treasury Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and other federal agencies for more than 30 years. She appears regularly before credit union groups to discuss current regulatory and legislative developments and works closely with CUNA’s Center for Professional Development on compliance training programs.
Prior to joining CUNA in 1980, Thompson was government relations counsel for the American Bankers Association (ABA), concentrating on regulations and legislation involving trust, securities, and tax law. Previously, she assisted ABA’s economic advisor, writing testimony on a wide variety of issues and specializing in the laws governing competing financial institutions.
Thompson holds a bachelor’s degree in government and economics from the College of William and Mary, a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University, and a law degree from Georgetown University.
