A solid understanding of money and negotiable instruments is critical to credit union operations. Describe the features that make a check or share draft a legally negotiable instrument
Describe five common types of checks or share draft endorsements
Explain common elements of an endorsement policy
Explain how to verify identity and a signature when cashing a check
Describe procedures for accepting checks and drafts for deposit

Detecting Bad Checks and Drafts:

Identify common signs that a check has been fraudulently altered
Describe signs that a check or draft may be counterfeit
Describe the use of split deposits, check kiting, and bogus government checks in attempting to defraud the credit union
List six rules for avoiding check fraud on a personal check
Explain how technology is helping to reduce check fraud

The Clearing Process:

Describe the check/draft clearing process
Explain the funds availability policy and endorsement standards required under Regulation CC
Define transit number, routing symbol, and MICR line as those terms apply to the check clearing process
Describe the impact of the Internet and other technology on the check clearing process

Additional Negotiable Instruments:

Describe how to identify a valid money order
Explain the difference between a cashiers check and a certified check
Describe the precautions one must take in cashing a travelers check
List the steps to take in making a cash advance on a credit card and issuing gift cards
