Credit unions are distinctive in the world of microfinance; as insured depositories, credit unions can offer the full range of savings and asset-building products in tandem with small and micro-loans.   Some credit unions have taken a “wait and see†approach to what appears to be a weak economic recovery, but smart credit unions are pursuing new sustainable sources for growth and profitability: microenterprise. Communities are reeling from high unemployment, shrinking budgets and a business sector struggling to survive. Many consumers have given up hope of finding work, while others are realizing that retirement will have to wait. Consumers in both groups are considering a microenterprise small business as their best hope for employment and a better way of living.   In this session, we will explore how best to serve this new wave of potential members. You will hear from leading experts in the field of community finance as well as learn best practices from two credit unions that have used microfinance to sustain the significant growth the credit union has experienced.This webinar is being jointly held by CUNA and the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions.

Ginger McNallyGinger is the founder of Mission + Money Matters, a consulting firm supporting the growth and innovation of community investment strategies domestically and internationally. Ginger assists community development financial institutions and foundations to achieve integrated financial and social impact goals. Ginger is nationally recognized for her work designing microfinance and healthy foods-related loan programs. With a thirty-plus year background in community investment, Ginger has designed, implemented and evaluated microenterprise programs in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and North America. In the Central Coast of California, Ginger designed the first regional microenterprise loan program serving new and expanding small businesses with limited capital resources. She also managed a successful regional business incubator program serving low-income, Latino entrepreneurs. Ginger served as chief executive officer of the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union, an innovative $86 million community development credit union, and its affiliated nonprofit, Santa Cruz Community Ventures. Sarah TaylorSarah is a senior vice president of Marketing and Community Development at ASI. She is also responsible for grant writing, fundraising and grants management at the credit union. Sarah managed ASI's role in the state's Small Firms Loan and Grant Recovery Program for small businesses, under the direction of the Louisiana Economic Development Department and the Louisiana Recovery Authority, and has helped funnel over $4.75M of grants and $14M of loans to small business owners in ASI's Target Market to date. Sarah also serves as executive director of A Shared Initiative, Inc. (ASII), a Community Development Corporation/Nonprofit offshoot of the credit union, launched by ASI volunteers in early 2006 to expand opportunities for low-income Louisiana residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina. ASII operates a HUD-certified homebuyer education and foreclosure assistance program, administers a $4MM+ revolving loan fund to provide affordable capital to low-income and otherwise disadvantaged micro-entrepreneurs and manages the Clifford N. Rosenthal St. Claude Community Center, located in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Scott ButterfieldScott Butterfields passion for the credit union movement is deeply rooted in a belief that the movements future success depends largely on maintaining its unique philosophy: not for profit, not for charity, but for service.
