Does your credit union have a diversity program? Did you know the NCUA, as of January 21, 2011 has a department dedicated to assessing the diversity policies and practices within credit unions? Within the broad package of financial industry reforms contained in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection is a provision that mandates each covered governmental agency (i.e., NCUA) establish an Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI) to assess diversity in management, employment and business activities. In this webinar, you will learn about OMWI's purpose and the areas this department is monitoring in credit unions.
Our credit unions should be reflections of the communities we serve. Your employees should come from a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, educational and economic backgrounds. A diverse employee group will result in a number of benefits for your credit union. These benefits include the inclusion of creative viewpoints, the ability to work effectively with a diverse membership base, access to a deep talent pool, increased employee and member retention and a positive impact on your credit union's bottom-line.
Continuing on our journey to Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), we will explore The Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Programs (OFCCP). On December 9, 2011, OFCCP issued proposed regulations raising the compliance standards for affirmative action covering individuals with a disability. The proposed regulations follow the previously proposed regulations for veterans. Both sets of regulations would usher in major additions to the existing affirmative obligations of federal contractors. Learn about OFCCP's major focus areas now and moving forward.
Your journey will end with a better understanding of Diversity and Inclusion to include:
- A better understanding of the roles of various governmental offices
- Reports and programs to file and/or establish
- Creating the business case for diversity and inclusion
- Senior management's role
- Employment law updates
Asset size of your credit union is irrelevant. Whether one billion or one million, you can have a successful program that weaves diversity and inclusion into the fiber of your credit union.
