2008 International Credit Union Day Celebration Plans
and Success Stories

Canada

ONR Employees' (North Bay) Credit Union

We have advertised in our local news paper, parenting company email and intranet, and distributed flyers to bulletin boards. We will be decorating our office serving refreshments, a logo slab cake, and various snacks. Members of our board of directors and audit committee will be available to meet and greet members throughout the day as well as staff. We have advertised the collection of non-perishable food items for our local food bank, supporting our credit union philosophy of "People helping People." We are promoting a membership drive that day, qualifying our members into a drawing for a grand prize. We are taking this opportunity to focus on member appreciation.

Shell Employees' Credit Union LTD, Alberta

Red carpet day for members: beverages and dainties along with door prizes and giveaways, and renting red carpet and a popcorn maker for the premises. We have a FATCAT coloring contest for the children up to age 12 with prizes for the top three.

Ethiopia

Addis Ababa Saving and Credit Cooperative Union

More than 500 saving and credit cooperatives will meet in one conference hall and celebrate the day. Some papers shall be presented on the occasion too, about Addis Cooperative bank, under formation, federation of cooperatives, etc. The remaining saving and credit cooperatives shall celebrate the occasion in their working places. Speeches, reports, etc., are some of the activities.

Malaysia

The People's Credit Union

Activities planned include a coloring competition for children, essay competition for youths, and International Credit Union Day celebration with songs, dances, drama, and cultural performances for credit union members and their families.

St. Lucia

St. Lucia Civil Service Co-operative Credit Union

A short talk on Lupus and its effects at the Ministry of Social Transformation. Many members are suffering from the disease and we feel it is an opportunity to shed light on the subject.

We're planning to have an open house on Credit Union Day with food, fun, and great giveaways!

United Kingdom

Croydon Savers Credit Union Ltd

We are organizing a FREE and OPEN conference on Monday the 27th, October 2008, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (first session) and 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (final session) which will explore what can be done realistically in Croydon to "Beat the Credit Crunch".

We will be pulling together our partners and stakeholders to help and advise both individuals and small businesses, in finding ways forward in these financially uncertain times. We would like to invite you to share imaginative ways to overcome the Credit Crunch in Croydon.

There are two sessions in the day - you can come to one or both, or drop in when you want. It is half-term week, and we expect a wide ranging audience.

The leader of the local public authority is joining the credit union as its 1,000 member.

Southend Credit Union

We are having an international coffee tasting with special pastries by local patisseries and a competition for how much is the piggy bank via our local school members.

Tower Hamlets Credit Union - Britain

Credit unions in Britain are now launching full bank accounts with visa debit and cash card options. We will launch our service on Credit Union Day. This is a major breakthrough for British credit unions and will support the "It Belongs to Me" brand perfectly.

West Lothian Credit Union Forum
