Letters to Congress
Letter to Reps. Hastert and Pelosi Regarding H.R. 749
April 26, 2005
The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert
Speaker
U.S. House of Representatives
235 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Mr. Speaker:
The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the nations nearly 86 million credit union members urge you to support The Expanded Access to Financial Services Act, H.R. 749, which is scheduled for a vote on the suspensions calendar of the House on Tuesday, April 26, 2005.
This measure would permit credit unions to offer check cashing, wire transfer, and money order services to eligible members within their field of membership.
H.R. 749 will enable credit unions to reach many individuals in the underserved and immigrant communities that typically do not use formal banking institutions and are forced to use high- priced money transmitting businesses. Credit unions would then have an opportunity to educate and build trusting relationships with these individuals, encouraging them to join a financial institution so they have access to a full array of financial services.
This important bi-partisan bill recently received unanimous support in the House Financial Services Committee. We strongly urge the support of the House leadership for its passage.
Sincerely,
Daniel A. Mica
President & CEO
Credit Union National Association
