Congressional District Level Credit Union Member Benefits

State Level Credit Union Member Benefits

The following files, last updated with data from December 2007, contain estimates of:

  • The number of credit union members in each congressional district
  • The dollar amount of federal income tax revenue that would be obtained by taxing the credit unions that are chartered in each congressional district. These estimates are based on the credit unions that have home offices in each district.
  • The potential decline in the dollar amount of benefits currently delivered to credit union members living in each congressional district assuming credit unions were subject to federal income tax. These estimates are based on the number of members residing in each district as reported in Project Zip Code.
  • The potential decline in the dollar amount of benefits that accrue to bank customers in each congressional district assuming the influence of credit unions is greatly reduced.

Each of the estimates varies considerably from district to district.

Nationally, however, credit union member benefits are about four times larger than the tax exemption. And bank customer benefits arising from the influence of credit unions are almost three times larger than the tax exemption.

In some cases a large credit union will have many members that reside outside of it’s home office congressional district. This can result in an estimated tax that is large relative to the estimated member and nonmember benefits. In these cases the tax is not included in the analysis.

Conversely, in some cases, a district will be home to few credit unions but many credit union members. This can result in an estimated tax that is very small relative to the estimated member and nonmember benefits.
