Commissioners earnest, ready to serve

The tone of Thursday's first meeting of the Renaissance Commission was decidedly business-like, but was spiced by an atmosphere of hopefulness and eager anticipation.

"Every single member voiced his or her gratitude at being chosen to serve on the commission," said CUNA President and CEO Daniel A. Mica. "But each also clearly voiced a notion of where the credit union movement should be going in the future. The commissioners had done their homework; they are ready to get down to work."

However, Mica pointed out that the commissioners are not determined to do all of the talking. "They know that their job is to listen to the movement and determine which direction it wants to take. Once they've done a great deal of listening, they'll begin formulating recommendations."

Mica noted that the mix of commissioners--in terms of experience in credit unions, asset sizes, and representation of federal and state charters-- portends good things for the commission's results. "Credit unions are looking for leadership and focus. That's what this group is all about, with a fine cross section of the movement represented here."

CUNA staff members and Renaissance Commissioners focus on the issues before credit unions in the organizational meeting Thursday in Washington, D.C.
