Treasury releases ‘phishing' ID theft report

WASHINGTON (5/27/04)--Treasury released an identity theft report on "phishing" at a forum in Kansas City, Mo., yesterday.

"When President Bush signed legislation giving consumers and law enforcement important new tools to fight the spread of identity theft, he sent a message to identity thieves that their schemes would not be tolerated," said Treasury Assistant Secretary Wayne Abernathy. "The report being issued today gives consumers even more information on how to detect, prevent, and mitigate the effects of the identity theft scheme known as phishing, a crime that costs American consumers and businesses billions of dollars each year."

The report is titled "Lessons Learned by Consumers, Financial Sector Firms, and Government Agencies during the Recent Rise of Phishing Attacks."

Phishing schemes are emails sent to consumers, directing them to a fraudulent website that looks legitimate, and asks them to enter personal and sensitive financial information that is then used to commit fraud.
