More phishing scams hook CU members
LEXINGTON, Ky., and HARRISBURG, Pa. (5/23/05)--Two more credit unions have reported being targeted by phishing scams, with at least 20 members in Kentucky falling prey to the scheme.
About 20 members of the University of Kentucky FCU, Lexington, called the credit union after they realized they had given information to scammers because of a fraudulent e-mail.
The e-mail was sent to faculty members, staff and students at the university and directed them to a dummy credit union site to provide names, account numbers, credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, PINs and card verification numbers.
The false site was "very impressive" in its similarity to the credit union's home banking site, said Kevin Siler, director of risk management (Lexington Herald Leader May 20).
The $179 million asset credit union blocked those accounts, and so far, no losses have been reported.
The credit union also is keeping tabs on credit/debit card and ATM transactions to detect any fraudulent use.
Jay Parrish, senior vice president/chief information officer, Members 1st FCU, reported that the Mechanicsburg, Pa., credit union also has been phished.
Members and nonmembers called the $1 billion asset credit union, saying they had received an e-mail that requests updated personal information due to a database software upgrade (Life is a Highway May 20).
The credit union is working with law enforcement officials to shut down the site and assured members that its security had not been briefed.
Consumers should remember:
- Be suspicious of e-mails with urgent requests for personal and financial information;
- Don't reply or click on the link the message; and
- Review statements for any unauthorized charges.
