Mica gets first-hand look at hurricane impact
NEW ORLEANS (10/19/05)--Meeting with credit union officials in the hurricane- and flood-ravaged city of New Orleans, Credit Union National Association (CUNA) President/CEO Dan Mica listened to accounts of the impact of the catastrophes on credit unions, as well as ideas on how credit unions can better respond to the next emergency.
"What I've heard are tales of nerve and ingenuity," Mica said, as he toured the New Orleans area with local credit union and League officials. "What's especially gripping is that credit union people in this city and state do not give in to the calamity, but look and find ways to overcome the devastation by continuing to serve their members."
Mica visited two credit unions on Monday in the first day of his two-day tour. At both Jefferson Parish Employees FCU and ASI FCU, Mica met with the CEOs of the credit unions, who briefed him on their situations. Mica also addressed a reception of local credit union officials.
Joining Mica in the two-day tour is Scott Earl, coordinator for CUNA of hurricane relief. Earl is also participating in the briefings to glean information as he prepares to begin developing an emergency preparedness plan for the credit union system.
