NCUF Disaster Relief Fund hits record $2.1 million

MADISON, Wis. (10/20/05)--Contributions to the National Credit Union Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund hit a record $2.1 million this week. Donations total $2,102,448.07--contributed since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29.

"The generosity of donors to the NCUF Disaster Relief Fund has enabled hundreds of credit union employees to survive the worst natural disaster in U.S. history," said NCUF Executive Director Steve Delfin.

"It's only fitting that we've reached this fundraising milestone during International Credit Union Week, at a time when millions of credit union people around the world celebrate the cooperative spirit that brings us together."

NCUF relief checks have helped credit union employees in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama pay for emergency housing, food, water, ice, batteries, gas and many other critical daily living essentials.

"These donations also helped their credit unions get up and running more quickly," Delfin said. "Once employees were placed in temporary housing and provided with basic necessities to resume their daily lives, they were able to get back to work and help their members recover as well."

However, "many still have serious long-term needs that are only now emerging," Delfin said. "So while we are grateful for the extraordinary outpouring of support from the credit union community, we are encouraging those who can to continue making contributions to help those who are still in need."

Credit unions can contribute to the fund via the resource link. They also can adopt a credit union affected by a hurricane, or offer assistance such as equipment and staff through the Relief Effort and Support of Credit Unions (R.E.S.C.U.) program being administered by the Credit Union National Association. Scott Earl is heading that project.
