Alabama foundation disburses $138,400 to victims
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (10/21/05)--The Alabama Credit Union League Charitable Foundation created a disaster relief fund to aid victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. To date, more than $138,400 has been disbursed to credit unions, members and employees in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
"As a member of the vast credit union family, we were pleased to provide support and help any way we could," said Gary B. Wolter, CEO, Alabama Credit Union League. "So many members and credit unions were affected during the storms that we wanted to provide some immediate relief and perhaps help pave the way toward long-term recovery."
The fund provided immediate quick-cash grants of $200 to any credit union members displaced by the hurricanes. Over the past six weeks, more than $17,400 was distributed to people from the four affected states.
Additionally, the foundation distributed more than $48,000 to credit union employees in Alabama whose homes or belongings were damaged.
The foundation also helped credit unions in Mobile get back in service by providing logistical support, supplies and other assistance. Affected credit unions received more than $63,000, and the Texas Credit Union Foundation received a $10,000 donation to assist its relief efforts for Hurricane Rita.
