Hurricane victims in CUs' thoughts on ICU Day

MADISON, Wis. (10/21/05)--This year's International Credit Union Day was the perfect opportunity to showcase the credit union philosophy of people helping people, particularly in light of the cooperation, support and assistance to credit unions affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The staff of the Texas Credit Union League (TCUL) wrapped up thousands of cookies to send to the 48 credit unions across the state that had been affected by Hurricane Rita.

"Whether responding to the needs of displaced hurricane victims, empowering young people to make wiser financial choices or reaching out to underserved markets, credit unions have proven themselves to be valued partners to their members and their communities," said Dick Ensweiler, TCUL president/CEO.

Pennsylvania State Employees CU, Harrisburg, focused on the support by and for members after the two hurricanes. "As the devastation caused by the twin hurricanes clearly pointed out, when disaster strikes in our state, our country or around the world, PSECU members and employees will be there to help out. They do, indeed, make it happen," the credit union said in a press release (Life is a Highway Oct. 20)

Louisiana Credit Union League President/CEO Anne Cochran and Executive Vice President Connie Major attended International Credit Union Day celebrations across the state, which was hit hard by both hurricanes (eNews Oct. 19).
