Hurricane Wilma douses south Florida CUs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (10/25/05)--Credit unions in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were closed Monday as the the eighth hurricane to strike Florida in 15 months made landfall.

Hurricane Wilma, a category 3 hurricane, made landfall at 6:30 a.m. EDT near Naples. By 5 p.m., it had cleared the state and was centered over the Atlantic about 230 miles northeast of West Palm Beach with wind of 120 mph (USA Today Oct. 24).

According to the Florida Credit Union League, credit unions throughout the affected area were closed. The league's special emergency system is available to any credit union wanting to set up a voice-mail contact system, said Mark Ivester, league vice president of communications and public relations.

Mike Welch, president/CEO, University CU, Coral Gables, reported that the offices were closed Monday and that the staff would assess the situation Monday afternoon. Power is out in the area, and if it is restored, the credit union will reopen.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) activated its disaster relief policy Monday to assist credit unions and their members repair and rebuild in areas where businesses and homes are damaged by Hurricane Wilma.
