NCUF relief fund continues to grow to meet needs
WASHINGTON (10/27/05)--The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) announced its Disaster Relief Fund has reached nearly $2.3 million, with contributions continuing to come in after Hurricane Wilma struck Florida credit unions earlier this week.
Hurricane Wilma comes on the heels of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which overwhelmed the Gulf Coast states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
The New York Credit Union Foundation (NYCUF) collected more than $50,000 from NYCUF, the New York State Credit Union League, 44 New York credit unions, numerous individuals and league staff members.
"NYCUF established the Disaster Relief Fund to facilitate donations from New York credit unions wanting to assist credit unions, staff, volunteers and members impacted by disasters both natural and manmade," said Executive Director Diane LaVigna Wixted.
"We extend special thanks to the following credit unions for their leadership donations: League of Mutual Taxi Owners FCU, TCT FCU, Teachers FCU and Visions FCU."
Denver-based SunCorp and its employees have donated $10,520 to various disaster relief funds, including NCUF's.
State Employees' CU, Raleigh, N.C., has collected more than $36,800 for disaster relief efforts.
To aid in the distribution of funds, the $12.7 billion asset credit union is working with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation (CCUF) and NCUF.
"At this time, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation is dispersing $500 to 150 families in Louisiana," said foundation Director Steve Elam. "The money donated by SECU members will help us reach out to even more families in need. These contributions certainly exemplify the People Helping People' spirit of credit unions."
