Status of eight Florida CUs unknown, reports SE Corp

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (10/28/05)--Southeast Corporate reports that it has been unable to contact several credit unions in the Dade/Broward county area, where Hurricane Wilma walloped Southern Florida Monday.

Kay Moon, Southeast's senior vice president of correspondent services, said there were at least eight credit unions not yet contacted.

As soon as it learned that credit unions on Florida's east coast felt the effects of the hurricane to a greater degree than had been anticipated, the corporate sent a team on a relief mission to help credit unions.

"We didn't wait to be asked, we just loaded up a truck with generators, water and gasoline and headed south," said Ken Schroeder, vice president of business continuity. He was accompanied by John Smiley, an information technology technician at the corporate. Both took part in similar Katrina relief efforts to Mississippi in September.

"Traffic lights are out, lines at gas stations stretch for at least two miles and people are literally pushing cars to fill their tanks," reported the team.

Southeast Corporate's operations center staff was in contact with many affected member credit unions and put together a route for the truck and helped secure supplies.

The team was greeted with enthusiasm by credit union employees who spread word of the truck's arrival to others who hadn't been contacted. Some credit unions were without generators. Others with generators had run out of fuel.

Southeast is asking member credit unions to call in with status reports.
