Dade County FCU launches hurricane relief for Wilma victims

MIAMI (11/4/05)--Dade County FCU has launched a hurricane relief program to assist members in Greater Miami who were affected by Hurricane Wilma.

The new program allows these members to receive unsecured loans up to $5,000 for rates as low as 5.9% annual percentage rate through Nov. 30 (Business Wire Nov. 3).

The loans are for hurricane-related necessities such as insurance deductibles, home and auto repairs or other needs that arise as a result of the storm. They are offered with repayment terms of 12-24 months. The loans and rates are subject to credit evaluation.

The community already can access funds through Dade County FCU's ATMs and branches.

As of 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, nine days after the hurricane struck South Florida, 20.5% of customers effected--roughly 196,000 Miami-Dade customers--were still without power. Florida Power & Light said Miami-Dade County power should be fully restored by Nov. 11, and Broward County will be restored by Nov. 13, according to The Miami Herald (Nov. 3)

About 429,000 residents still have no phone service--about 10% of BellSouth's customers in Miami-Dade. In Broward County, about 16% of customers or 154,000 were without phones.
