N.C. league to help CUs collect community service data

GREENSBORO, N.C. (11/14/05)--The North Carolina Credit Union League (NCCUL) already has begun to consider how best to work with the state's credit unions to collect data that will better quantify credit union service to the community.

According to John Radebaugh, president of NCCUL, "Credit unions' service to those of modest means was a significant focus" of the hearing held Nov. 3 by the House Ways and Means Committee on the credit union tax exemption (Weekly Update Nov.11). At the hearing, critics pointed to expanding fields of membership and questioned credit union service to individuals of modest means.

"We don't have anything to apologize for," he said. "The University of North Carolina study that we commissioned earlier this year is proof positive that credit unions in North Carolina are providing significant financial benefit to consumers" in the state.

As for serving people of modest means, "we do a good job in this area, but need to continue to do more and need to do a much better job documenting and communicating credit union service to the underserved," he said.

"What we need to take away from (the)...hearing is that we have to continue telling our story as credit unions, specifically we have to address some of the substantive issues raised during the hearing," Radebaugh said.

He expressed confidence that credit unions will accept the challenges. "Congress knows we are good stewards of the tax exemption they granted credit unions 70 years ago. We will provide them with specific information to further justify their faith in the movement."
