Carolinas foundation awards $96,000 to hurricane victims

GREENSBORO, N.C. (11/14/05)--The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation sent $500 cash gifts to Louisiana credit union staff rendered homeless or displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The checks--totaling a combined $96,000--were mailed at the first of the month to 192 employees of credit unions and Louisiana Credit Union League (LCUL) staffers (North Carolina Credit Union League's Weekly Update Nov. 11).

The cash gifts were made possible through fundraising efforts of credit unions in North and South Carolina.

"Credit unions across the Carolinas have worked hard to raise funds to provide hurricane relief to the Gulf," said CCUF Executive Director Steve Elam. For many Carolina credit unions, "hurricanes are fresh in our memories, and we know firsthand how devastating they can be. We hope that in some way our gifts help the folks in Louisiana recover," he added.

In discussing how relief funding could be most helpful with LCUL President Anne Cochran, Elam said, "We both agreed with so many people homeless and displaced by the storms, that money would have the greatest impact. A lot of credit union staffers are helping others get back on their feet...now, it's their turn to receive some help."

CCUF funds also are underwriting the costs of a mobile branch in Pascagoula, Miss., being used by Jackson County Employees FCU, which was completely destroyed by Katrina. Carolinas Telco FCU, Charlotte, loaned the mobile branch to the credit union in September.
