Gov. Blanco asks CUs, banks to join Project Restore HOPE

BATON ROUGE, La. (11/22/05)--Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco took the next step in getting the state back on its feet with the announcement of Project Restore HOPE.

The program, a partnership with Operation HOPE, will initiate economic recovery for victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

Financial institutions, including credit unions, are being asked to provide one-on-one financial counseling and advice, toll-free financial help lines, informational resources and online case management (US Fed News Nov. 18).

Blanco said Project Restore HOPE needs at least 5,000 financial volunteers nationwide over the next six to 12 months.

The HOPE Corps volunteers will assist victims in recovering lost or destroyed financial documents and personal identification, and provide emergency budget and credit guidance.

Volunteers also will help with deferring mortgage payments, working with creditors, applying for government or private agency assistance and insurance claims.

More than 2,700 hurricane survivors have received help from Project Restore HOPE.
