NCUA workshops for low-income CUs in La.

WASHINGTON (11/2/05)—The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has scheduled a Nov. 9 meeting for credit unions with less than $20 million in assets that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The free meeting, called "Louisiana Credit Unions—Focusing on the Future," will feature workshops with information from a number of organizations, including the following:

  • African-America Credit Union Coalition, on it's participation in R.E.S.C.U., the Relief Effort and Support for Credit Unions program organized by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the leagues;
  • CUNA Mutual Group, with information about its field staff and catastrophe adjusters;
  • Internal Revenue Service, discussing opportunities for credit unions to partner with local organizations by providing free tax preparation services, community outreach and education of various tax credits for their members;
  • Louisiana Credit Union League, outlining challenges in the aftermath of the storm;
  • National Credit Union Foundation, with information on its program grants available for small credit union development and disaster relief grants for affected credit union employees; and
  • Small Business Administration, with information about low-interest loans to replace under-insured property for credit unions and business owners.
The meeting will be held at the JW Marriot Hotel New Orleans. NCUA has also announced a free credit union workshop in Memphis, Tenn. on Nov. 8, one in its series entitled "Working to Create Opportunities for Credit Unions." There will be sessions on recent changes to 5300 Call Reports, how to collect delinquent accounts, and more. It will be held at Holiday Inn Select Memphis East Hotel.
