Michigan CUs ante up nearly $600,000 in hurricane relief

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (1/18/06)--Michigan credit unions have collectively donated nearly $600,000 to benefit the victims of the 2005 hurricanes, reported the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL).

The league kept a running tally of donations since early September when the industry-wide effort began. Approximately $425,000 of the aggregate amount was donated to relief organizations, and an additional $161,000 was contributed to the Michigan Credit Union Foundation's Hurricane Relief Fund, created in cooperation with MCUL.

From the Hurricane Relief Fund, the Michigan foundation committed $76,000 to the American Red Cross and nearly $86,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) for credit union rebuilding.

Among the state's top fundraisers are State Employees CU, Lansing, which contributed more than $120,000 to the Red Cross and the NCUF; and LOC FCU, Farmington, which raised more than $50,000 for the Red Cross.

In addition to monetary donations, credit unions reached out in other unique ways, donating clothing and other disaster-relief provisions, conducting blood drives, and working with local church and government organizations to help displaced victims find housing in Michigan.

Kellogg Community FCU, Battle Creek, even lent its mobile credit union branch and ATM to Gulf Coast Community FCU in Gulfport, Miss., after Hurricane Katrina destroyed two of Gulf Coast Community's three branches.

"Credit unions exist to serve their members, but they also understand and demonstrate a commitment to their social mission of strengthening neighborhoods and communities in the U.S. and throughout the world," said David Adams, president and CEO for MCUL.
