CDCU vows to rise from Katrina's devastation

NEW ORLEANS (2/1/06)--Its physical presence stripped to studs, Total Community Action CU still has its spirit and mission intact five months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast.

The office of the New Orleans-based community development credit union was located on the ground floor on a two-story complex. What remains are stripped-down studs, a pile of rubble, and a lone teller window.

After re-creating the credit union's financial records by hand, the staff remains committed to its membership.

CEO Rhonda Hundley, board member Jackie New and Total Community Action Inc. administrator Faye Wooten continue to work toward re-opening the $1.3 million asset credit union by July 1.

Despite members being scattered and jobs being lost, loans are being repaid, Hundley said.
