St. Bernard Unified School in Chalmette, La., recently received the shoes, which will be handed out by teachers to children in need. The boxes of shoes also include a T-shirt and a note from the credit union.
"Making a positive difference in the lives of children is important, and we wanted the children in Louisiana to know that a little credit union in Compton, Calif., was thinking about them," said Charlotte Johnson, president/CEO of the $28 million asset credit union.
"After watching the devastation caused by Katrina on television, I was unable to sleep and kept thinking about the children; where would they attend school and would they have shoes and clothing, weighed heavily on my mind," she said, adding she knew that having lost everything "the children would need shoes, especially with the winter months coming."
"The outpouring of support and concern has touched the credit union movement in Louisiana in a way that words cannot explain," said Anne Cochran, president/CEO, Louisiana Credit Union League.
The league coordinated the donation in cooperation with St. Bernard School Board Employees FCU, Covington, La., which serves St. Bernard Parish School System faculty and staff.
The donation came together through the efforts of the credit union's board, staff and members, credit union vendors, Compton community organizations, and Payless ShoeSource stores.
