New 'database' for CU members is a phishing scam

MODESTO, Calif. (3/31/06)--Credit union members are the target of a new phishing scam, which seeks to relieve them of their personal information to build a fictitious database.

According to The Modesto Bee(Mar. 29), members receive an e-mail that identifies the sender as the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The e-mail claims a new credit union member database is being created and tells the recipient to enter their personal information for inclusion in the database.

NCUA said the e-mail appears to be a phishing scam; NCUA does not solicit personal information by e-mail.

People who receive such e-mails should not click on the links in the message. Instead, delete the message. Recipients of these e-mails may also report the incident to local law enforcement and consumer protection groups.
