Louisiana CUs step up to help New Orleans police
HARAHAN, La. (5/11/06)--Even as they continue to recover from Hurricane Katrina themselves, credit unions in Louisiana are coming together to help another community torn by the disaster--police officers.
Hundreds of bulletproof vests were lost in the rising waters of the hurricane, leaving the officers of the New Orleans Police Department without protection.
In response, Louisiana credit unions are joining forces to replace as many vests as possible at a cost of $500 each (eNews May 10).
"The officers of the New Orleans Police Department have survived the loss of their homes. In many cases, they are separated from their families, but still show up for work everyday to protect their neighbors," said Mike Ellington, president/CEO, New Orleans Police Department Employees CU. "We can recognize the sacrifice of these men and women, and keep them safe by providing this essential equipment."
The Louisiana Credit Union League already has raised enough money for 10 bulletproof vests, said President/CEO Anne Cochran.
Credit unions that wish to join the effort are asked to contact the league by May 15.
