Branches, other services back at work in New Orleans

HARAHAN, La. (5/12/06)--Credit unions continue to re-open outlets and gain access to restored services in New Orleans.

Metairie-based Post Office Employees CU re-opened a Loyola Avenue shared branch outlet that had been closed due to damage from Hurricane Katrina (eNews May 10).

St. Bernard Parish School Board Employees FCU returned to its pre-Katrina location on Bernard Highway in Chalmette. St. Bernard had worked out of Post Office Employees CU in Covington since August 2005, when the St. Bernard office was heavily damaged by the hurricane.

New Orleans credit unions also gained the ability to receive magazines, newspapers, catalogs and other second-class mail for the first time since the hurricane.

Mail service was disrupted when floodwaters destroyed electrical equipment at the main New Orleans post office and its processing and distribution center.
