More CUs in southern Florida close for Ernesto

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (8/30/06)--Credit unions in southern Florida Tuesday began announcing closures for today, as Tropical Storm Ernesto edged closer to the Florida shore. Ernesto was expected to make landfall last night.

As of 7 p.m. (EDT) Tuesday, Ernesto was 105 miles from Miami, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, and was continuing northwest at about 13 mph. It was not expected to reach hurricane status before landfall, but the storm showed signs of improving organization throughout Tuesday (www.weather.com Aug. 29).

The Florida Credit Union League, which is monitoring the storm, said Tuesday it had received a number of announcements from credit unions about closures, including:

  • Rinker Materials CU, West Palm Beach, will be closed today. It plans to reopen on Thursday.

  • Priority One CU of Florida, Sunrise, closed at 1 p.m. Tuesday and planned to stay closed today but would assess the situation as to whether to stay closed all day.

  • University FCU, Miami, closed at 2 p.m. Tuesday and expected to open after the storm passes at 11 a.m. today.

  • Power 1 CU, Pembroke Pines, closed Tuesday at 2 p.m., saying it will "most likely" be closed today.

  • Eastern Financial Florida CU, closed all South Florida branches at noon Tuesday and its Miramar headquarters half an hour later. Its Tampa branches remained open. It will assess today's conditions and try to open some branches today if weather permits.

  • Sun CU in Hollywood, closed at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed through the morning today. It hopes to open this afternoon or Thursday morning at the latest, it told the league.

  • Space Coast CU said it would be closed today and plans to reopen Thursday.

  • Central Florida Postal CU said all branches are closed today. They have placed the message on their branches, website and telephone system, the league said. The branches plan to open Thursday.
