CUNA joins national preparedness coalition

WASHINGTON (8/31/06)--As part of its ongoing disaster preparedness efforts for credit unions, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) will participate in the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security's (DHS) National Preparedness Month 2006 Coalition.

According to DHS, CUNA is among the national organizations which will provide during September "information, host events and sponsor activities that disseminate emergency preparedness messages to and encourage action" in their "members, employees, stakeholders and communities across the nation."

"How quickly a credit union can get back to serving members after any disaster depends on emergency planning done today," said CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica. "National Preparedness Month is a time to reflect on recent disaster lessons learned and to focus on being prepared."

CUNA--in coordination with state credit union leagues and the National Credit Union Foundation--created the Relief Effort and Support for Credit Unions (R.E.S.C.U.) in response to last year's Hurricane Katrina. From its initial response mission, R.E.S.C.U. has evolved to support credit unions in preparation for any type of disaster, according to Mica.

As part of the preparedness effort, CUNA this summer launched its free Credit Union National Emergency Information System (CUNEIS), with a toll-free number for credit union information. That number, 1-877-CULOCATE or 1-877-285-6228, is intended to help credit unions stay in contact with members in the face of any disaster.
