A record $3.3 million was donated to the fund, and all donations benefited members of the credit union community, NCUF reported as part of the movement's marking the one-year anniversary of Katrina.

As part of the more than $3.4 million in aid, Louisiana received nearly $1.9 million in relief, with Mississippi being granted $1.15 million. More than 1,400 individual grants were made.

"The outpouring of aid from the credit union community has been one of the few bright spots in these darkest times," wrote Christopher Maurer, CEO, UNO FCU, New Orleans. His thank-you letter continued with, "Because of this aid, my credit union has not lost a single employee as a result of the storm.

"Organizations like yours make me proud to be part of the credit union movement."
