Ohio CUs worked with 77 schools on fin ed last year
DUBLIN, Ohio (11/3/06)--Ohio's credit unions are working to change the trend toward teens having greater credit card debt by the time they enter college by helping schools educate them.
During the 2005/2006 school year, credit unions distributed nearly 5,200 student financial education packets to 77 schools, career centers, youth programs and correctional facilities throughout the state.
Credit unions distributed the materials, developed by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) and made possible through the Credit Union National Association, NEFE and Cooperative Extensive Services.
Credit union employees volunteer their time to teach the financial education classes with the teachers. They also have used the materials to teach college students, individuals living at the YMCA, and students at a school for the deaf.
"By teaching basic financial skills, Ohio credit unions are helping build a brighter future for Ohio and Ohioans," said Paul Mercer, president of the Ohio Credit Union League.
"We're teaching the state's future leaders to make wise financial decisions--starting them down a path to home ownership, higher education, or a good job. We're helping them create opportunities for a better life," Mercer said.
Examples of the programs include:
- The Northwest Chapter of Credit Unions' annual "Finances 101: Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk," educated more than 400 high schoolers from 17 Northwest Ohio schools with a personal finance game that taught them real-world finance situations.
- Superior FCU, Lima, bused more than 400 seniors from Allen County high schools to its third annual financial education day to learn basic personal finance concepts.
- The Education Credit Union of Clark County participated in a work-study program at two high schools in which non-college bound students save 25% of their earnings.
- Universal 1 CU, Dayton, opened a student-run branch in Oakwood High School.
