USA Today notes CUs' payday alternatives
WASHINGTON (12/4/06)--USA Today continues to keep track of credit unions and their alternatives to payday lending.
In covering last week's report from the Center for Responsible Lending on payday lending, the national daily paper mentioned the program from State Employees' CU, Raleigh, N.C., and noted that "Many credit unions are already offering payday alternatives."
The program from the $13.6 billion asset credit union has been cited before in USA Today--in an editorial and a feature story that included Prospera CU, Appleton, Wis., and Wright-Patt CU, Fairborn, Ohio.
The Center for Responsible Lending, which is affiliated with Self-Help CU in Raleigh, N.C., reported that payday loans cost consumers $4.2 billion per year (News Now Dec. 1).
