Oregon CU pledges $1 million for medical training
EUGENE, Ore (12/7/06)--Oregon Community CU has pledged $1 million to the Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, Eugene, Ore., to fund an innovative physician training program.
The gift from the $738 million asset credit union will enable 80 medical students to receive practical training during five-week clerkships at clinics throughout the state.
The Eugene, Ore.-based credit union will make its gift in 10 annual installments of $100,000 each. Funding for the gift will come from the recurring small fees that merchants pay when credit union members use their debit cards.
CEO Mandy Jones said the gift is intended to help address a growing physician shortage, which tends to be more acute in smaller communities, and the need for better access to quality health care across the state.
