Carolinas program grants $172,000 in first year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (12/11/06)--The Micro Community Grants program has awarded $172,000 to 11 non-profit agencies in North and South Carolina in its first year of operation.

The micro-grants effort is the social responsibility project of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation (CCUF), which credited the efforts of credit union chapters in both Carolinas for its success (North Carolina News Dec. 7).

Non-profit agencies are allowed to submit grant applications in cooperation with credit unions in both states. The program is designed to provide funding for innovative programs developed by small, grassroots, non-profit agencies.

Examples of micro grant projects funded by CCUF include:

  • Adult Life Programs, Hickory, N.C., for its adult care and caregiver services;
  • HorsePOWER Inc., Greensboro, N.C., for therapeutic equine activities;
  • Crisis Control Ministry of Forsyth County, N.C., for its Wee Care! cereal food drive project;
  • Sexual Trauma & Counseling Center, Greenwood, S.C., for its Stewards of Children project;
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater High Point, N.C.;
  • Crossroads Group Home, Greenville, S.C., for young girls between 10 and 21 who have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused.
  • Raleigh Rescue Mission;
  • Durham Rescue Mission;
  • The Boys & Girls Club, Sumter, S.C.;
  • Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA), Port Royal, S.C.; and
  • Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse (CODA), Beaufort, S.C.
