The SECU foundation was created by State Employees' CU, a $14 billion credit union based in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hertford Pointe apartment project is expected to help recruit and retain quality teachers for Hertford County schools, which have high teacher turnover due to a lack of affordable housing within the county.

A mid-December groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the apartment complex in Ahoskie, N.C. The site is within walking distance of both the high school and an elementary school.

When completed in July 2007, Hertford Pointe apartments will rent for $500 per month. As funds are repaid through rental income, SECU Foundation will use the money to build additional rental units in other low-wealth rural counties.

SECU's local Advisory Board, comprised of area member volunteers, suggested the project.
