Detroit radio show reports CUs' career transition program

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (1/8/07)--The media continues to pay attention to Michigan credit unions' unique effort to aid members and families displaced by the loss of manufacturing jobs.

The latest coverage of the Career Transition Program (CTP) came from a radio interview for the "The Rick Bloom Show," which airs on WDTK-AM in Detroit (Michigan Monitor Jan. 1).

Mark Shobe, president/CEO of DFCU Financial based in Dearborn, and David Adams, president/CEO of the Michigan Credit Union League, used the radio interview to inform listeners in Wayne County and the surrounding area about the CTP and how credit unions fulfill their social responsibility.

The CTP gives eligible members a 10-year unsecured loan for career retraining and education at significant discounts over an ordinary unsecured loan or typical student loans.

DFCU Financial originated the program with a commitment of $10 million. The program has since grown to include commitments of almost $40 million by nearly 40 Michigan credit unions that will either offer the program or are seriously considering participation.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth earmarked an additional $1.5 million to assist CTP participants with the cost of textbooks and $200,000 for career counseling and placement services. Earlier CTP media coverage included articles in newspapers throughout the state.
