Oregon CUs, banks unveil ID-theft-fighting website
BEAVERTON, Ore. (10/23/07)--The Credit Union Association of Oregon (CUAO) is joining forces with the Oregon Bankers Association to launch a website that fights identity theft and hopes to help catch more perpetrators of fraud.
The partnership, called the Financial Institutions Security Task Force (FIST), will inform the general public of major banking security issues, and will serve as a link among the task force, the media, law enforcement and the public (Portland Business Journal Oct. 19).
The website has information on fraud and robbery statistics and trends, current robbery rewards, state and national resources, upcoming events and media materials.
The FIST group comprises representatives from Oregon credit unions, savings and loans, and banks, as well as representatives from state, local and federal law enforcement agencies.
Last year Oregon experienced 179 incidents of bank robberies and burglaries--the 17th highest rate in the U.S.--according to FBI statistics.
Bounties of up to $5,000 are being offered by the FIST robbery rewards program for information leading to the arrest and conviction of perpetrators who defraud Oregon financial institutions. FIST, working with the FBI, has paid out more than $27,000 in reward money since 2001.
