CU 'Situation Toons' circulate on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (8/2/07)--The Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA, H.R. 1537) gets an extra boost this week when selected Capitol Hill staff and lawmakers receive the daily credit union "Situation Toon."

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) produced the cartoon series to spotlight the efforts of banking groups to disrupt legislative efforts designed help credit unions serve all members--including the "Little Guy."

This is the final week before the summer recess. Congress will return to Washington on Sept. 4.

The email referred readers to CUNA's website for more details about the bill.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's edition of Roll Call--a newspaper covering Congress--carried a photograph and caption from a faux press conference Tuesday on Capitol Hill. Actor Wes Johnson parodied a banker who lobbies against credit union legislation.

In addition, CUNA yesterday released a second video of the "banker" on Capitol Hill. Taking a satirical look at banker complaints about credit unions, Johnson appeared at the Capitol South Metro stop in front of a "false front" of a bank. He presented banker "complaints" about credit unions for about two hours.

While the "banker" complained, other credit union advocates stood by to hand out lollipops affixed to cards which read: "Don't be Suckered: Please ignore our banker friend." Passersby were reminded to help credit unions "look out for the little guy."
