Check Cashing: An Opportunity for Credit Unions
Mark Meyer is Director of Innovation for the Filene Research Institute. In this position, Mark works with pioneering credit unions across the nation to convert promising financial service and product ideas into marketplace realities.The Filene Research Institute is a unique nonprofit organization that examines issues vital to the future of credit unions and the millions of members they serve. Its national research program is an ongoing source of fresh, innovative financial product ideas. In addition, the Institute provides credit unions with insights into managerial problems and opportunities, consumer needs and trends, legislative and regulatory questions, and competitive forces. More than 1400 credit unions, credit union organizations, and individuals are members of the Institute and make its research programs possible.
Mark joined the Filene Research Institute and assumed his present position in January, 2003. From 1995-2000 he was Vice President of Human Resources and Legal counsel at Arizona State Savings and Credit Union, based in Phoenix with offices across the state. He was Assistant Vice President-Credit Union Enterprise at the CUNA Mutual Group from 2000-2002. While attending Western CUNA Management School, he was President of the Phi Class in 1997, 1998, and 1999 and received the school's 1999 Charlie M. Clark Award for Inspirational Leadership. Mark also serves on the Board of Directors for CUNA Credit Union.
Mark received his J.D.-Law degree from the University of Nebraska and his B.S.-Business Administration degree from Northern Arizona University. His career began as an attorney in Denver, Colorado. He is licensed to practice law in Arizona and Colorado.
Mark is the proud father of two pre-school daughters, and a newborn son.

Hampel served as a staff member at Navy Federal Credit Union in Virginia during a one-year sabbatical in 1989-90, where he studied credit union operations and carried out a variety of consulting projects. Bill has a Ph.D. in Economics from Iowa State University. He is a member of the American Economic Association and the National Association of Business Economists.

Bob is currently a Vice President of CUNA Mutual Group serving the Information Technology (IT) area of the company. In his current position he has the responsibility for IT Internal Operations and Information Security reporting to the Chief Technology Officer. Bob joined CUNA Mutual Group in 1988 as a manager in the Information Systems Division and was promoted in 1990 to Assistant Vice president, I/S Marketing Systems, with responsibilities for the support and development of the Marketing and Finance Systems' information technology. In 1996 he was promoted to Vice President, Information & Technology Services and assumed his present role in early 2001. He has also served as the Technology Liaison to the Member Services, Marketing and Sales organizations.
