CULAC

Credit Union Legislative Action Council What is CULAC?

The Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) is the federal PAC for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). CULAC’s purpose, as defined in its Articles of Association, is to “provide the opportunity for individuals interested in the future of the credit union movement to contribute to the support of worthy candidates for federal office who believe, and have demonstrated their belief, in the principles to which the industry is dedicated.”

CULAC accomplishes its mission by contributing to and supporting federal candidates and committees that support the Credit Union Movement. For the 2003-2004 election cycle, CULAC contributed over $2.3 million to credit union-friendly candidates, ranking it the 11th largest PAC in the United States and the 7th largest among trade associations in contributions to federal candidates, according to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). During that same cycle, credit union members made over 40,000 individual contributions totaling nearly $3.5 million to CULAC.

Individuals who are associated with CUNA’s member credit union leagues and with credit unions who have signed permission agreements with their leagues are eligible to participate in CULAC. (Credit unions may only grant permission for PAC solicitation to one trade association per year). All contributions to CULAC are strictly voluntary and are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. For more information about CULAC, contact your league, or Trey Hawkins, at CUNA.
