Election Watch 2008Partisan CommunicationsCUNA, a League or Credit Union may advocate the election or defeat of a particular federal candidate and/or solicit contributions for a federal candidate. With the increased regulation of political action that has emanated from the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA) it is fortunate that credit unions are able to participate in activities that they do best: communicate with their members. During the election season that includes communication about federal candidates in the form of emails, letters, phone banks and candidate appearances. To best assist credit union friendly Members of Congress in their contested 2008 general reelection campaigns, credit unions possess a significant advantage under Federal Election Law. The Federal Election Commission's laws and regulations governing partisan communications allow CUNA, the Leagues and our affiliated credit unions to communicate directly with our membership and encourage them to vote for or against a candidate for federal office. This allows us to fully leverage our large credit union membership, both nationally and in individual Congressional Districts. Practical Tips for Election Year Activities
