MADISON, Wis. – Credit union professionals working in financial counseling, collections, and loan departments can stay current on financial counseling practices through a new offering on CUNA’s March on-site training schedule.

CUNA’s Certified Financial Counselor School: Advanced takes place March 30 through April 4 in Miami to help professionals build on their financial counseling expertise in areas including: student loans, delinquent taxes, reverse mortgages, leadership, presentation skills, developing community relationships, and more. Additionally, the school is designed to meet the recertification requirement for those who are looking to maintain their Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor designation.

Along with the advanced offering, the Certified Financial Counselor School: Part I will take place simultaneously in Miami for credit union staff committed to helping members gain control of their financial futures. From March 30 to April 3, Part I will examine the role of financial counselors in helping members prevent and resolve financial problems. It will address spending plans, improving creditworthiness, creditors’ rights and remedies, creditor/member relations, and designing and implementing a counseling program. Attendees interested in earning their Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor certification can take part one of a two-part exam at the end of this school.

Other March on-site events from CUNA include:

The 2008 session of the popular CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) is the first to be held at the landmark Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The March 2-6 event will feature Gen. Colin Powell, political commentator Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball” and NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show,” and humorist and best-selling author Dave Barry, among others.

The 15th annual CUNA Marketing and Business Development Council Conference will take place March 16-19 in Nashville, Tenn., to cover hot issues, trends, and challenges in the industry. Some topics to be addressed include: mobile marketing, media buying, creative business development strategies and current issues, strategic marketing, branding, measuring success, and more.

The Collections and Bankruptcy School: Introduction will take place in San Diego to teach credit union staff how to effectively communicate and work with delinquent members to keep collection practices sound. During Introduction, March 9-14, students will explore collection basics, bankruptcy, repossessions, member service, and collection tools and tips.

The Business Lending and Services Conference, March 12-14, in Tempe, Ariz., offers credit unions professionals the chance to discover what it takes to build a successful business lending program. It begins with an exploration of the current business services market and products in order to determine if this area is right for each credit union. The conference then explains the needs of business owners, how their operating cycles affect financial needs, and what they are looking for in their financial institutions. Additional topics include: creating an in-house program, the role of technology in business lending, the pros and cons of CUSOs, and developing a business program and plan.
