CUNA Cancels 2001 National CU SymposiumSeptember 17, 2001FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WASHINGTON -- CUNA President Dan Mica today announced that in the aftermath of last week’s tragic events, CUNA has decided to cancel the 2001 National Credit Union Symposium that was scheduled to begin this Saturday, Sept. 22, in San Francisco. “We feel that it would be inappropriate to go forward with our meetings next week. The purpose of our Symposium is to foster an atmosphere of education and networking opportunity for our members. We feel doing so is just not possible at a time when so many credit unions have more pressing concerns at home following last week’s tragedy. We are sensitive to their need to put their members first,” Mica explained. “Our hearts and prayers continue to go out to the thousands of victims of last week’s attack and their families.” CUNA is notifying all registered attendees and exhibitors about the cancellation and will fully refund their conference registration or offer a credit toward future CUNA meetings. CUNA will also offer advice on dealing with travel agents as well as their hotel accommodations. Credit unions with questions can contact CUNA Meetings & Special Events at 1-800-356-9655 x5700. Both the CUNA Annual General Meeting and CUNA Board meeting set for Sept. 24 have been postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date. With its network of affiliated state credit union leagues, Credit Union National Association serves more than 90% of America’s 10,700 credit unions, which are owned by more than 80 million consumer members. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives where people are worth more than money. For more information, visit www.cuna.org.
