Credit Union Center Employees "Catch The Spirit" of Volunteerism for International Credit Union DayOctober 11, 2001FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MADISON, WI - In honor of International Credit Union Day, 2001, employees of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and CUNA Credit Union have designated Tuesday, Oct. 16, as Credit Union Day of Caring. To celebrate and to act on the credit union spirit and philosophy of "People Helping People," More than 70 Credit Union Center employees will be taking part in volunteer projects throughout the Madison area. "This is a great example of how credit unions and credit union people serve their communities," says Pete Crear, executive vice president and chief operating officer for CUNA. "The theme of International Credit Union Day is ‘Catch our Spirit,’ but our theme every day is ‘people helping people.’" Volunteers will deliver Meals on Wheels, do yard or garden work for Independent Living, distribute "Koats for Kids," sort clothes for the Community Action Coalition, and work at the Second Harvest Food Bank’s food pantry and the Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore resale shop. For 53 years, the more than 37,000 credit unions around the world have set aside the third Thursday in October to celebrate International Credit Union Day. Each year, it gives the movement an opportunity to remember our proud history as we promote understanding and support for the credit union difference worldwide. "Catch Our Spirit" is the theme of this year’s International Credit Union Day celebration, slated for October 18, 2001. For more information, contact Tom Dunn, director of Corporate Communications for CUNA at (608) 231-4002 or tdunn@cuna.com. With its network of affiliated state credit union leagues, Credit Union National Association serves more than 90% of America’s 10,700 credit unions, which are owned by more than 80 million consumer members. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives where people are worth more than money. For more information, visit www.cuna.org.
