SchlumbergerSema Announces Strategic Alliance with CUNA Network Services
November 27, 2001
AUSTIN, TX—SchlumbergerSema, a world leader in smart card technology, today announced that they have joined
forces with CUNA Network Services to deliver a new generation of smart card-based solutions that address the
growing need for online privacy and protection in the financial services industry. Under the terms of the
agreement, CUNA Network Services will market, distribute and support SchlumbergerSema payment, IT and security
related smart card-based solutions to more than 10,000 credit unions across the U.S.
Through this alliance, the nation’s credit unions will be able to offer their members convenient, leading-edge
smart card-based solutions that meet the high security standards mandated for credit unions by the National Credit
Union Administration (NCUA). As a result, credit union members will be able to use secure authentication to access
financial portals to manage accounts for electronic payment, home banking and other registered financial services.
Consumers who are members of participating credit unions can also use SchlumbergerSema smart cards as secure
devices for storing and managing personal data, including favorite URLs, passwords, addresses and accounts.
"SchlumbergerSema has chosen to both invest in, and form a technology alliance with CUNA Network Services
because they are a premier services company addressing the IT and security needs of the credit union movement.
CUNA Network Services has a clear mission to support the NCUA regulatory and security requirements that enable
credit unions to compete on level playing fields, utilizing the latest technology in a secure environment," said
Paul Beverly, Vice President of Smart Cards and Terminals for SchlumbergerSema North America. "We believe in the
increasingly valuable services credit unions bring to their communities and members, and that CUNA Network Services
is a long term partner to support the growing needs of all credit unions, both large and small."
"Working with CUNA Network Services and our other strategic partners, SchlumbergerSema will help us empower
credit unions to offer their members leading edge technology to manage secure e-commerce applications," said John
Hobko, president and CEO of CUNA Network Services.
CUNA Network Services will utilize newly released SchlumbergerSema e-gate? technology to bring credit unions and
their members the advantages of increased security and convenience through smart card-enabled network access. The
e-gate technology enables a smart card to plug directly into the standard USB (Universal Serial Bus) port on a PC,
eliminating the need for a card reader, separate power supply and driver software. With e-gate technology, credit
unions issuing MasterCard and Visa payment cards have a clear migration path to future smart card and secure
payment technology platforms.
CUNA Network Service’s Hobko added, "We are extremely pleased to be joining forces with SchlumbergerSema. I am
confident that the technical solutions, resources, and expertise that SchlumbergerSema offers in the smart card
sector will enhance CUNA Network Services efforts to bring added value to credit unions and their members."
