MADISON, Wis. – Credit union volunteers can gain insight into critical issues facing their credit unions during one of the first 2008 educational offerings from CUNA.

The CUNA Volunteer Institute takes place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the Vallarta Palace to help new and experienced board members, committee members, and CEOs to improve their credit union knowledge and prepare for the future. The Jan. 5-9 event will also cover topics such as: BSA essentials, strategy development, market trends affecting credit unions and members, business lending, human resource basics, the Policy Governance model, and more.

The optional Compliance Fundamentals for Your Board pre-conference workshop takes place Jan. 5 to provide an overview of the major credit union compliance issues and what board members should know about them. Volunteers will also review regulations from an employer’s perspective to develop a better understanding of what employees can and cannot say to members as well as learn the potential consequences of non-compliance.

Credit union lending professionals can learn how to use tax returns to analyze and qualify loan requests for members with non-traditional incomes during a three-session eSchool beginning in February.

The Using Tax Returns to Qualify a Loan eSchool meets Wednesdays, Feb. 6-20. Participants will learn how to analyze a variety of forms and schedules to verify non-traditional incomes and determine a members’ ability to repay a loan.

This eSchool will also teach how to:

  • Quickly obtain monthly net or gross income from a borrower's personal income tax return,
  • Identify the information that borrowers hide and reveal in their own interest when applying for a loan, and how this may affect their borrowing ability, and
  • Understand the forms involved in these non-traditional income situations and how to obtain the relevant information.

An eSchool is a series of interactive classroom sessions that features live, real-time instruction from industry experts via the Internet and a telephone conference call. Students have an opportunity to interact with the instructor and other participants via online chats and live discussions. Participants may register for specific webinars or the entire series of sessions as an eSchool.
