A Message from Dan Mica on International Credit Union DayOctober 18, 2006FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MADISON, Wis. – I extend greetings to those observing International Credit Union Day, October 19, 2006, from your friends at the Credit Union National Association, as we celebrate this year’s theme “Credit Unions: Making a World of Difference.” Since 1948, we have set aside the third Thursday in October to celebrate the role that credit unions play in their communities – all over the world. These not-for-profit, democratically controlled, member-owned cooperatives not only offer great service, better rates, and lower fees, they also provide access to financial services and improved economic and social opportunities for members worldwide. In remote rural communities in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America, new credit unions offer financial services to millions who never had any access before. In Afghanistan, where women were denied basic human rights, credit unions have given them the opportunity to become members and serve on the board. Today, 42,000 credit unions in 92 countries proudly serve 157 million members – and that number continues to grow. Credit unions have always embraced a “People Helping People” philosophy by empowering their members to improve their financial futures and uniting to help those in need. It is this cooperative spirit and commitment to members that we celebrate today. Daniel A. Mica
