FTC’s Proposed Privacy Rules

(APPLIES TO NONFEDERALLY-INSURED CREDIT UNIONS)

  • On March 1, 2000, the proposed privacy rules approved by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) were published in the Federal Register. These rules apply to nonfederally-insured credit unions and to information about consumers that is disclosed by credit union service organizations.
  • The FTC rules are substantially similar to the privacy rules that were issued by NCUA on February 24, 2000. NCUA’s rules apply to federally-insured credit unions.
  • Click here for CUNA’s Regulatory Comment Call on NCUA’s proposed rules, which provides a summary of the rules. NCUA has also requested comments on numerous issues, which are incorporated in the questions that follow the summary. The FTC is also requesting comments on many of the same issues.
  • Comments on both the FTC and NCUA proposed privacy rules are due by March 31, 2000. If you would like to submit comments to CUNA, please feel free to fax your comments to Jeffrey Bloch at 202-371-8240; e-mail them to Jeff at jbloch@cuna.com or to Kathy Thompson at kthompson@cuna.com ; or mail them to Jeff or Kathy in c/o CUNA's Regulatory Advocacy Department, 805 15th Street, NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005.
